In the Introduction to this book, Gavin Reid said of the Church of England in 1995 that it was “trying to get its head round serious financial loses at the centre and declining numbers in many of the parishes. Clergy, at that time, were filling up questionnaires about their financial and working conditions.
Once off the plane in Santiago I met a much smaller and poorer church that was worrying about none of these things…it was a growing church with church planting initiatives...I met with clergy to find that they were not focussing on their pay and conditions but on the best way to reach out and to grow their congregations.”
